Engineers from the US space agency NASA designed a mass-produced ventilator for COVID-19 patients in just 37 days, which required more parts than a conventional ventilator.

The ventilator device was approved by the Icahn School of Medicine in New York on April 21.

Engineers at NASA's Jeet Propulsion Laboratory have developed the ventilator , which is intended to help treat critically ill patients with COVID-19 who have a shortage of ventilators.

Hospitals around the world, including the United States, are currently experiencing a shortage of traditional ventilators.

Director of  NASA Michael Watkins said, "We specialize in building spacecraft instead of medical devices, but the best engineering, testing and prototype development are also part of our expertise."

He said, "When our people realized it was time to help the medical community and the general public, they felt it was their duty to share their expertise with others."

NASA engineers are now trying to get the device approved by the US Food and Drug Administration on a rapid basis.

The new device will not replace existing ventilators in hospitals that are designed to work for many years and can be used for a variety of medical issues.

Most Advanced Ventilator, developed by NASA called Vital, are designed for Code 19 patients and have a lifespan of 3 to 4 months.

According to NASA's Chief Health and Medical Officer JD Pollock, "ICU units are admitting COVID-19 patients who need dynamic ventilators. Will be able to used to minnimise COVID 19 effects.

These ventilators are quick to prepare and can be easily repaired without the need for spare parts.

They can also be used in any location such as hotels and convention centers that are being used as field hospitals for corona virus patients.
