Death of Black George Floyd: Curfew Imposed in Various US Cities but Protests Continue
Protests continue in the United States despite the imposition of a curfew following the killing of an unarmed black man by a police officer, while the arrested police officer has been charged with murder and produced in court on Monday.
Curfews have been announced in various US cities to quell the ongoing unrest over the violent death of a former police officer, George Floyd, on the Black Farm. Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck.
US President Donald Trump has sent a message of "healing wounds" following the death of the late George Floyd, but also said he would not allow angry mobs to take the law into their own hands. Officer Derek Chavan is accused of killing George Floyd, a 46-year-old white American, and will appear in court on Monday, June 1.
Minnesota is the most volatile region where curfews have been ordered for the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul on Friday and Saturday evening. Protesters violated the curfew on Friday, setting the property on fire, and there was widespread looting.
An initial autopsy, which included a criminal complaint against Mr. Chow, found no evidence of "strangulation." Being stopped by the neck side caused his death.
Mr Floyd's family and his lawyer, Benjamin Krump, welcomed the move, but said it was too late. The victim's family said they were considering more serious murder charges. They also want the arrest of three other officers involved.
