Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry has said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government is working on a plan to convert public transport in metropolitan cities into electric vehicles.
According to Reports, Fawad Chaudhry, while addressing with the British company EGV for construction of electric buses locally, said that electric vehicles in Islamabad Following the introduction of charging stations, the government has decided to install electric vehicle charging stations on motorways across the country.
Fawad Chaudhry further said that EGV, which is the largest manufacturer of electric buses in Europe, will also assemble electric vehicles in Pakistan.
He said this was the government's second agreement with a foreign company to build electric buses.
The Federal Minister said that in the first phase, electric buses would-be run-in Lahore, followed by Karachi and Islamabad. He said that 40% of public transport would be shifted to electric in the next 10 years.
On the occasion, he criticized the Orange Line Metro Train project launched by former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and said that the PML-N government had spent Rs 60 billion while the present government had spent an annual subsidy of Rs 12 billion for the project.
He further said that in the next 2-3 years, the entire network of motorways will be shifted to charging electric vehicles.
It may be recalled that Fawad Chaudhry had announced last month that battery-powered electric buses would be launched from this year.
In addition, Daewoo Pakistan Express Bus Service Limited and (Chinese company) Skywell Automobile signed a strategic alliance agreement to create a value chain for electric vehicles in Pakistan.
